Terms of Service

Last updated September 15, 2026.

These terms govern your use of Platenwell (the app at app.platenwell.com and this marketing site at platenwell.com), operated by J.P. Sariz (“we,” “us,” “our”). Questions: sariz@tuta.com.

By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

The service

Platenwell is a prose drafting toolkit with notes, export, and realtime collaboration features. It is pre-release early alpha software. Features change without notice. Bugs happen. Uptime is not guaranteed. Keep your own backups of anything you cannot afford to lose.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Platenwell. If you are under 18, you represent that a parent or guardian has reviewed and agreed to these terms on your behalf. By using the service you represent that you meet these requirements.

Accounts

You sign in with an email magic link, or with email and password (via Supabase). If you use a password, you may optionally enable authenticator-app MFA (TOTP). You are responsible for maintaining control of your email inbox and credentials, and for all activity under your account. Notify us immediately at sariz@tuta.com if you believe your account has been compromised.

Access and billing

There is no paid plan at this time. Access is at the operator’s discretion. Hosting costs for Netlify and Supabase are described on the Pricing page. Tips via Ko-fi are voluntary and do not purchase a subscription, seat, or guaranteed uptime.

Roles and collaboration

Projects have access roles including:

  • Owner: the user who created the project. Owners can edit all content, manage members, create and revoke invite codes, and delete the project.
  • Editor: granted when a collaborator redeems an invite code. Editors can read and write project content but cannot manage members or delete the project.
  • Viewer: granted when a collaborator joins via a shared join link. Viewers can read project content but cannot make edits.
  • Reader: anonymous access via a reader link that needs no account, limited to the documents that link exposes.

Invite codes and share links are generated by owners. They can carry an expiry date, a use limit, and can be revoked at any time by the owner. Treat them as access credentials: do not share them publicly unless you intend open access to that project.

Your content

You retain ownership of the documents, notes, images, and all other materials you create in Platenwell. You grant J.P. Sariz a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, transmit, and display your content solely as necessary to operate and provide the service, including syncing your content in realtime to your collaborators and generating exports you trigger.

You agree not to upload or create content that:

  • is illegal or violates any applicable law;
  • infringes third-party intellectual property rights;
  • contains malware, scripts, or code intended to harm the service or its users;
  • harasses, threatens, or abuses other users.

We do not review user content proactively. We reserve the right to remove content or suspend accounts that violate these terms.

Acceptable use

  • No attempting to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorized access to the service or its infrastructure.
  • No scraping, crawling, or automated abuse that harms other users or our hosting costs.
  • No reverse-engineering or decompiling the software for the purpose of building malware, spam tools, or directly competing products.
  • No using the service to send unsolicited communications to other users.

Infrastructure dependencies

Platenwell is built on Supabase (auth, database, realtime sync, and file storage) and hosted on Netlify. Outages, policy changes, or service disruptions from either provider can affect Platenwell without any fault on our part. We are not liable for downtime caused by third-party infrastructure.

Software ownership

Platenwell is proprietary closed-source software owned by J.P. Sariz. It incorporates substantially modified code derived from MIT-licensed open-source projects (notably Milkdown, frankensteined with Yjs and various parts of MarkText, SilverBullet, Foam, and Superscript). Those upstream works remain under their original licenses; the required notices are on the Open Source Notices page. Platenwell as a product is not open source and is not MIT-licensed. Nothing in these terms grants you any rights to the underlying source code.

Disclaimer of warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, SECURE, OR SUITABLE FOR PRODUCTION-CRITICAL USE. YOU USE THE SERVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, J.P. SARIZ AND ITS OPERATORS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, REVENUE, PROFITS, OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SERVICE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. OUR TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNTS YOU ACTUALLY PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR (B) FIFTY US DOLLARS ($50).

Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these terms, if we determine it is necessary to protect the service or other users, or if we cease operating the service. You may stop using the service at any time. Termination does not entitle you to a refund of any amounts paid. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (ownership, disclaimers, limitation of liability, governing law) will do so.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law provisions. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these terms or the service shall first be attempted to be resolved informally by contacting us at sariz@tuta.com. If informal resolution fails, disputes shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Texas, and you consent to personal jurisdiction there.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms at any time. The date at the top will reflect the latest revision. For material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify active users (e.g. via an in-app notice). Continued use of the service after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
